Last month, it wasn’t the opulent couture or plethora of celebrity sightings that gained attention at Paris Couture Week. Rather, it was a singular woman with heavy eye makeup who stole the scene. Julia Fox.
In a patent leather mini-dress and equally daring makeup, Daniel Kolaric for Pat McGrath brought the drama to Schiaparelli’s Spring 2022 couture show in the form of Julia Fox. Donning graphic lines that swooped from the brow bone to the inner corner of the eye, creating an almost raccoon-like effect, Ye’s now-former-beau immediately made headlines for the daring if a little messy look.

It was a ’60s-meets-’90s moment, a little twiggy, a little Kate Moss – with just enough celebrity profile to make it a fashion moment, and the fashion world followed suit voraciously.
Lori Taylor Davis created fantastically smudged, lived-in eye makeup for Christian Cowan by darkening the lids and waterlines with black eyeliner and shadow. The result was a more simple, casual version of Fox’s perfectly symmetrical eye, which requires a steady hand and precise hand movements to achieve.
At Peter Do, Aaron de Mey experimented with grungy makeup. To create a watercolored effect, the artist brushed earthy shades of burgundy and brown across the lid and below the waterline. Even Michael Kors got in on the trend, sending models down the runway with intense, blackened-rimmed eyes.

And then there was LaQuan Smith, who had Fox open his Fall/Winter 22 show. Sheika Daley created an ’80s twist on the actor-turned-“muse”‘s raccoon eyes by using dramatic black eyeliner with pops of neon pink.
Fox then jetted to Milan to attend Versace’s runway show, where McGrath riffed on the smokey eye (which Donatella V. is rarely seen without), this time paired with a bleached brow. Amidst the show’s star-studded cast, the Hadid sisters showcased nearly invisible eyebrows and jet-black smoked-out liner.
