Zara Taps John Galliano for Archive-Based Collaboration

After two years away from the fashion system following his departure from Maison Margiela, John Galliano is returning through an unexpected partnership with Zara.

The two-year collaboration will focus on reworking the brand’s archive rather than producing entirely new collections. Galliano will reinterpret existing garments, a process he has described as “re-authoring,” shifting attention away from seasonal churn and toward what can be done with pieces that already exist. It’s a subtle but notable move at a time when most brands are still operating on constant output.

The project is rooted in Galliano’s relationship with Marta Ortega Pérez, chair of Inditex, who has played a central role in reshaping Zara’s image over the past few years. Under her direction, the brand has leaned more heavily into creative partnerships and cultural positioning, moving beyond its earlier identity as strictly fast fashion. This collaboration feels like a continuation of that strategy, but on a much larger scale.

Galliano’s approach for the project is expected to be genderless and seasonless, with a focus on silhouette, proportion, and construction rather than trend. It places his work in a very different context, one defined less by exclusivity and more by reach. How that translates across Zara’s global production model will be one of the more interesting aspects of the release.

The first Galliano x Zara collection is scheduled to debut in September 2026. It will likely serve as a test of how far a designer’s authorship can carry within a system built for accessibility and volume, and whether those two things can meaningfully coexist.

More broadly, the collaboration reflects where the industry is right now. The line between luxury and mass market continues to blur, and projects like this make that shift harder to ignore.
