The Best Alexander McQueen Looks of Lady Gaga’s Career

Lady Gaga’s relationship with Alexander McQueen has always been more than celebrity styling, it’s a creative symbiosis between a pop auteur and a fashion house built on performance, futurity, and the spectacle of becoming. Across red carpets, editorials, videos, and now following her 2026 Grammys “Abracadabra” performance, Gaga has treated McQueen’s work with an emotional resonance that few artists cultivate with designers, repeatedly returning to his archive at decisive moments in her career. Throughout her trajectory, her sartorial relationship with McQueen has been an undercurrent running through her various artistic reinventions, resurrecting his pieces as narrative extensions of her own metamorphoses.

Harpers Bazaar 2011 (Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2011 RTW)

The butterfly editorial for Harper’s Bazaar (April 2011) features Gaga in a custom interpretation of Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2011 ready-to-wear, including the 3D butterfly dress and boots. Shot during the Born This Way promotional cycle, the look is rooted in McQueen’s obsession with hybrid forms and metamorphosis, sculptural wings and alien delicacy positioning her as an inheritor of his surrealist grammar.

2026 Grammys “Abracadabra” (Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2009 “Horn of Plenty”)

For her “Abracadabra” performance at the 2026 Grammys, Gaga wore a feathered bolero and sculptural skirt from Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2009 “Horn of Plenty” collection, one of McQueen’s darkest, most theatrical shows. Originally conceived as an apocalyptic retrospective, the look becomes a live ritual in Gaga’s hands, a resurrection of McQueen’s fashion-as-elegy.

Bambi Awards 2011 (Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2012 RTW)

At the 2011 Bambi Awards, where Gaga won Best International Pop Artist, she wore a molten-gold gown from Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection. Paired with a surgical red lip and sculptural hair, the look embodies Burton-era McQueen at its most imperial: metallic futurism with ceremonial edge.

A Star Is Born London Premiere (Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2013 RTW)

For the London premiere of A Star Is Born, Gaga chose Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2013 ready-to-wear. It’s one of her most regal McQueen moments, merging Elizabethan inflection with the house’s structural romanticism. Gold filigree, sculpted silhouette, and exaggerated proportions.

Bad Romance Music Video (Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2010 “Plato’s Atlantis” RTW)

“Bad Romance” is the defining Gaga × McQueen moment. The video directly features Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2010 “Plato’s Atlantis” collection, which famously premiered the song to the world via the first-ever live streamed fashion show. Alien skin-prints, the Armadillo boots, fashion and camp in a way only Gaga can execute. The Armadillo boot would become one of Gaga’s most iconic fashion signatures, with only 24 pairs ever produced, 3 of which Gaga personally purchased at a Christy’s auction. Here, she becomes a co-conspirator in McQueen’s futurist mythos.

2019 Oscars Red Carpet (Custom Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton)

At the 2019 Academy Awards at which she won her very first Oscar for Best Original Song, Gaga wore a custom Alexander McQueen gown by Sarah Burton, a black, highly structured, minimalist silhouette with sculptural hips and a dramatic train. It represents one of her most restrained McQueen appearances: Burton’s architectural clarity replacing McQueen’s chaotic maximalism with ceremonial severity.

2009 VMAs (Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 1998 “Joan”)

Gaga’s veiled red lace ensemble at the 2009 MTV VMAs, sourced from Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 1998 “Joan” collection, gothic martyrdom meets pop provocation. It was the first time she channeled McQueen’s sacrificial glamour on a major stage, and her Best New Artist win that night fixed the look as a defining early milestone in her career.

2010 VMAs White Carpet (Custom Alexander McQueen, inspired by FW10 “Angels and Demons”)

For the 2010 MTV VMAs white carpet, Gaga wore a custom Alexander McQueen gown based on his Fall/Winter 2010 “Angels and Demons” collection. The collection drew on Byzantine art, the carvings of Grinling Gibbons, and Old Master altar pieces. She walked the carpet accompanied by four discharged military servicemen and women as an explicit protest against the United States’ then-active Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, an act that frames the look as both political and performative. The gown was amplified with a massive black and bottle-green bustle skirt created by Alex Noble from roughly 20 metres of net.

Vanity Fair Italia 2009 (Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2006 RTW)

In her 2009 Vanity Fair Italia editorial, Gaga wore vintage Alexander McQueen from Fall/Winter 2006 ready-to-wear: characterized by Elizabethan motifs, sumptuous lace, and a shawl of blonde locks cascading over her frame, embryonic hints of the visual vocabulary she would later develop through deeper engagements with the house.

Gaga has often reflected on her relationship with Lee Alexander McQueen as fleeting but indelibly imprinted on her creative DNA. “It was like someone handed me a candle and then blew it out,” she told V Magazine in 2016. “But at least I get to be around his friends, and help make them feel the impact they’ve had on fashion.” Through each return to his archive, Gaga extends that candlelight forward, threading McQueen’s legacy through her own metamorphic visual language.
