Claude’s World

While driving along the highways that branch out of Toronto’s downtown, one witnesses a bewildering contrast of forces; nestled in rolling hills of wheat lie mammoth-sized shipping and logistic hubs. Like foreign bodies, their sprawling steel exteriors sit on the idyllic horizon, imposed, indifferent and totalizing. As the trend of AI data centre construction also spreads into Canada, and major tech companies are encircling Alberta’s prairies as a prime location, Liminul’s May editorial explores how late-stage capitalism’s rapacious demands interrupt and transform the natural landscape.

What distinguishes this new infrastructural frontier from those that came before is its apparent immateriality. Artificial intelligence is often imagined as something weightless: an intelligence suspended in clouds, detached from geography and physical constraint. In reality, every query, image, prediction, and synthetic world generated by machine learning depends upon an immense network of servers, energy systems, cooling facilities, and resource extraction. As investment pours into AI and speculation surrounding artificial general intelligence intensifies, these hidden architectures are rapidly becoming among the most consequential forces shaping the contemporary landscape. Rather than an escape from the material world, artificial intelligence is revealing itself as one of its most voracious consumers.

Drawing from the visual language of the iconic American painting “Christina’s World” by Andrew Wyeth, our May editorial repositions its protagonist within this altered contemporary terrain. No longer oriented towards a distant home, the pastoral “Christina” instead faces systems of scale that exceed comprehension. Like an alien vessel in a cornfield, the infrastructure of hyper-consumption appears suddenly, and brings with it a quiet violence. The changes it will herald are obscure, and we are defenseless against them anyhow; all we can do is gaze from a distance.
