Glitchcore, both a style and a sound reminiscent of post-digital sensibilities, PC music, hyper pop, and a certain air of rebellion against the status quo is having a moment. Playing on tech nostalgia and obsolete modes of representation the trend makes productive that which up until recently seemed redundant and defunct. Replicating the vibrant and abstract patterns created by bugs and errors on early computers, the trend is essentially another form of anoemia (longing for something never experienced) that seems to be everywhere in popular culture as Gen-Zers who weren’t around to experience the 1980s or Y2K long for the pre-digital era.
Some print designers seem to have fallen under glitchcore’s chaotic and alluring spell for SS22′, making modish pixelated and kaleidoscopic patterns that mimic the visuals of technological error of yore. Nostalgia or not, they point to the increasing and exponential impact that technology and the digital era are having on the runways.
